This thoughtful testimonial is on a separate page Added on September 26, This article in Bicycling has 10 good crash stories with great photos: Added on December 27, Just so you know! I was wearing a v good helmet, which saved me! Added on December 15, I was riding my bike a kid knocked into me I flew off my bike bounced off of my helmet in the rocks.

I cut my arm open and needed stitches. The doctor said my head would’ve been cut open without the helmet and it probably saved my life. Supported completely by a patient supervisor and college I completed my research and was awarded a MPhil. I do my best to let people hear how important cycle helmets are, and encourage as many as possible to use them, but am still noticing exceptions most days by cyclists presumably imagining accidents don’t happen in the early hours! Mine had been exactly that!

Before this guy jumped those lights, I had luckily got myself a quality helmet and a good early system so I had it on. Added on April 13, During a cycling trip to Mallorca I had a pretty major accident on day one which, had I not been wearing a helmet, would have resulted in me no longer being here. I was descending at approx.

As I hit the brakes I lost control of the rear and was immediately aware of the fact I would not make the corner. I tried in vain to get around but ran out of road, went into the road side ditch and was catapulted off the bike, head first into a rock.

I’ve looked around a bit here and other forums but it seems like all the info is rather old so I wanted to see if there was any new info I should know about. Also I have a couple of particular problems that aren’t covered: I used to ride to class through college and law school and the crankshaft would come off every two weeks, the guy who sold me the bike was a good guy so he kept trying to repair the problem, replace the parts, etc. At one point he got fed up and gave me the highest end crankshaft he had in the store.

It still lasted only two weeks. Eventually I got sick of it and red loctited the crankshaft on after completely degreasing it , that actually lasted 2 months. My friend gave me a cheap walmart bike and the crankshaft on that actually lasted I think it was a single piece of metal but I couldn’t tell , but the bike was incredibly uncomfortable and didn’t fit me.

I never use the top 3rd of the gears. Even on big hills they offer too little resistance and my legs can’t really move that fast. As a result I tend to just stand on the pedals most of the time. I would prefer to start cheap and build up as I continue biking. I have an idea that I want a road bike, but I suspect that has more to do with the handlebars than anything else, but definitely I will only be riding on paved areas.

Speed is kind of a factor I mention this cause some people say get a crap bike if your fat, the extra effort will help you get in shape , I live in Arizona so wasted effort is going to kick my butt in the summer.

Schwinn engineers looked at durability instead of weight savings, so they insisted on Bash Guards on the derailleurs and had Shimano build them with additional weight of large bash guard.

On bikes older than you need to use reference to other, known year bikes, or pull out the crank to look for a date stamp on it. Doing both is a good idea.
